Lake District Summer Music Festival announces 10-day event

From string quartets and jazz to baroque specialists and world music, expect musical performances across a range of genres, ensuring something for everyone to enjoy – all set against the beautiful backdrop of the Lake District.

Find festival venues in Kendal, Ambleside, Hawkshead, Grasmere, Coniston, Grizedale Forest and more.

In celebration of their 40th year, the 40s theme has been woven in. Look out for the special Fanfare 4-40 and the Famous 40s event, presenting some of music’s most wondrous Opus 40s.

Outstanding saxophonist Jess Gillam opens proceedings in her hometown of Ulverston with her ensemble and a stunning mix of folk, jazz, classical and pop.

Further highlights include performances by the world-renowned pianist Paul Lewis, one of the most celebrated Beethoven performers on the planet, award-winning string quartets like the Barbican, Novo and Vertavo quartets, and the Apollo Saxophone Quartet – also marking their own 40th birthday.

Alternatively, go on a walking tour with a musical twist through Kendal, take part in community drumming and orchestra workshops or enjoy an afternoon tea with music from the festival’s resident ensembles.

Musical activities are also on offer for children and families combining music, art and storytelling.

The festival is renowned for supporting young musicians by providing workshops as well as a stage to perform on as part of the Lake District Music Academy Ensemble.

New generation performances this year include the Trio Havisham, the Sintra String Quartet and the Dovestone Quartet.

In memory of the festival’s late founder, The Renna Kellaway Emerging Artist fund, established this year, will provide vital support as well as a launchpad for these and future emerging artists over the next 40 years.

The 2025 programme will conclude with the Northern Chamber Orchestra and a festival chorus of 100 voices for a performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony at Kendal Leisure Centre – the perfect way to end the musical celebrations.
