  • Make Music Day, a global celebration of music, takes place on June 21st, the summer solstice.
  • Thousands of free concerts and musical events are planned in over 150 U.S. cities.
  • Florida boasts numerous Make Music Day events across various cities, including Amelia Island, Orlando, and Tallahassee.

On June 21, the world will make some noise.

Make Music Day is an international celebration of music, held every year around the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. More than 5,000 free public concerts, performances, and other tune-filled events are planned in public spaces in more than 150 U.S. cities.

“The world’s largest annual music event invites every kind of musician — young and old, amateur and professional, of every musical persuasion — to come out to streets, parks, plazas, porches, rooftops, gardens, and other public spaces to celebrate, create, and share their music,” the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) said in a release.

Events include “the world’s best karaoke” in New York City, where singers sit in the front seat of a Cadillac with an immersive 19-speaker AKG Dolby Atmos sound system and three professional backup singers in the backseat helping out.

In Henderson, Nevada, 50 students will play at 50 pianos in a colossal performance at the Southern Nevada Music showroom.

Circle Singing events, where singers improvise without sheet music or preparation, will be held in nine cities across the country.

A global Taking Flight event will bring together musicians from nine different countries to perform together in a streaming podcast.

And there are many local events planned. Many of them are in Florida.

What is Make Music Day?

Make Music Day began as the Fête De La Musique in France 43 years ago, when the staff at the country’s the Ministry of Culture came up with a musical holiday full of free music around each street corner and park, with anyone and everyone invited to join in or host performances.

The joyous event grew in popularity and spread to different countries, coming to the United States in 2007 with Make Music New York. Last year, 141 U.S. cities organized 5,304 free concerts all on the same day.

When is Make Music Day?
