Letter to the editor: Music is for everyone

At Strings Music Festival, we believe music is for everyone. That belief isn’t just a tagline—it’s central to our mission of connecting people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities through the power of live performance.

That’s why we present annual sensory-friendly concerts, designed for individuals who experience sensory processing challenges. Held in the Strings Pavilion, these performances are carefully adapted for accessibility.

We lower sound and lighting levels, open doors early for gradual entry, and provide a relaxed, judgment-free environment where guests can move, vocalize, or take breaks as needed.

For many families, these concerts are a rare chance to experience live music together without stress or stigma. Parents often share that it’s the first time their child has attended a cultural event as a family. For individuals with disabilities, these events offer more than music—they foster belonging and inclusion.

“Accessibility and inclusion are central to our values,” says Elissa Greene, Executive Director of Strings Music Festival. “We want everyone in our community to experience the joy and connection live music brings.”

This year’s concert features Payden & Andrea, a Colorado folk duo known for their calming, heartfelt performances. Previously members of the Denver band Avenhart, they performed in Steamboat’s 2019 WinterWonderGrass and Steamboat Unplugged benefit concert.

The concert takes place Monday, July 14 at 11:00 a.m. Admission is pay-what-you-can, with sensory tools and flexible seating available. At Strings, inclusion sets the stage—so everyone can feel the music.
