LSG Sky Chefs workers protest at music festival over low wages and costly health care

Workers from LSG Sky Chefs, who supply fresh food items to 7-Eleven stores, took their grievances to the public at the When We Were Young music festival in Las Vegas.

The festival, sponsored by 7-Eleven, draws tens of thousands of attendees.

Culinary Union members are highlighting the low wages and high costs of health care benefits faced by Sky Chefs workers.

Ted Pappageorge, Secretary-Treasurer for the Culinary Union, said, “We want the public to know that behind the free Slurpees and fancy branding, there is a real human cost associated with 7-Eleven’s sandwiches and salads.”

Sky Chefs workers, covered by a national collective bargaining agreement with UNITE HERE, have been negotiating for better wages and benefits since 2018.

Josefina Rebollar, a porter at Sky Chefs, shared her struggle, stating, “I’m earning just $15.50 an hour, which isn’t enough for me to pay for both my bills and my family health care – that costs $168 every single week.”

The workers engaged festivalgoers with free materials to raise awareness about their fight for a new contract.
