Resurrection’ and what to expect from Michael C. Hall’s return

Today’s the day…when Michael C. Hall reprises his Emmy-nominated role once again as America’s favorite vigilante serial killer: Dexter Morgan. The first two episodes of the premiere season of Dexter: Resurrection are now streaming, making it the fourth series in the Dexter-verse.

The Dexter revival series is chock-full of new uber-villains, with big celebrity names, like: Uma Thurman, Peter Dinklage, Neil Patrick Harris and Krysten Ritter. It takes place in a Gotham-esque New York City, where serial killers are summoned for a MurderCon-style meetup.

“They don’t all live in New York City, but let’s say they’ve been invited there; it’s a gathering,” Dexter creator and executive producer Clyde Phillips . “This season is a unique launching pad for however many years this series will be going.”

Here’s what to know about Dexter: Resurrection, including how to watch, a quick recap of the franchise and a look at the cast.

🩸 A quick recap of the Dexter franchise (spoilers ahead!)

The original Dexter series follows Dexter Morgan (Hall), who struggles with strong homicidal urges, and calls it his Dark Passenger. His adoptive father and police officer, Harry Morgan (James Remar), teaches him how to control these dark thoughts by following a code, only killing those who have escaped justice. Dexter’s ability to control these urges is the central theme of the show, while trying to maintain a normal life as a forensic technician for the Miami Metro Police Department. The 8-season show ran from 2006-2013.

The sequel series Dexter: New Blood is set 10 years after the events of the Dexter finale and ran from 2021-2022. It follows Dexter Morgan trying to live a quiet life under the alias “Jim Lindsay” in a small town in upstate New York. Events lead him to kill again, waking up his Dark Passenger, while also reconnecting with his son, Harrison. The finale ended with Harrison shooting and killing his dad. Or so we thought…

Then there was Dexter: Original Sin, a prequel series that takes place 15 years before the events of Dexter and debuted in 2024. It looks at a young Dexter Morgan (Patrick Gibson) who first starts working for the Miami Metro Police Department while learning to channel his dark urges. It was announced in April that greenlit for production.

The official summary for the series says, “Dexter: Resurrection takes place weeks after Dexter Morgan (Hall) takes a bullet to the chest from his own son, as he awakens from a coma to find Harrison (Jack Alcott) gone without a trace. Realizing the weight of what he put his son through, Dexter sets out for New York City, determined to find him and make things right.

But closure won’t come easy. When Miami Metro’s Angel Batista (David Zayas) arrives with questions, Dexter realizes his past is catching up to him fast. 🫀 How is Dexter Morgan still alive?

At the end of Dexter: New Blood, fans are led to believe that Dexter Morgan had finally met his fate after his son shot him.

“Well, you know, he didn’t get shot in the head,” Hall shrugged as he told in an interview, saying it was his idea to resurrect the character.

“The conversation started as a result of my saying, ‘What if he didn’t die?’” he said in a relaxed way, according to the Guardian. “I can’t take credit for the whole scope of what we’re up to, but it was a notion that I casually floated. What if the end of New Blood was something that enabled Dexter to relinquish some burden that he’d been carrying for a long time?”
