Sounds of the Zoo music festival unites Kalamazoo community | Arts And Entertainment

Sounds of the Zoo #1

The Go Rounds performing live in downtown Kalamazoo as part of the Sounds of the Zoo festival.

Sounds of the Zoo hosted their fourth music festival across eight venues including Bronson Park and Bell’s Brewery Sept. 22 through Sept. 28.

The festival was free and open to the public, featuring a diverse range of local artists as well as international artists.

“I’ve seen so many huge smiles on people’s faces, which makes my heart happy,” said Production Team Member Will Maracle. “People shouldn’t be deprived of hearing good music because they can’t afford it.”

Sounds of the Zoo Founder Jennifer Hudson-Prenkert highlighted the mission-based focus of the organization.

“It’s connecting the community through different styles of music so that different groups of people can see themselves in that music,” Hudson-Prenkert said.

She continued: “It’s hard doing events right now, but I know that this is necessary and needed. It’s all about the music for me and creating change through music.”

Japanese artist Goh Kurosawa performed his compositions at the festival.

“This event is really eclectic, and I can tell that Jennifer really loves music,” Kurosawa said.

He continued: “It really does display a great way of showcasing many different genres and styles. One of the things I enjoyed was just watching Jennifer moving to the music.”

Hudson-Prenkert emphasized the need for stability through student engagement and community sponsorships.

“We want to keep growing and getting the word out, and it takes time,” she said. “I would like to connect more with the students.”

Hudson-Prenkert also encouraged students in Kalamazoo to come out for Sounds of the Zoo events.

“Keep an openness that whatever you see at Sounds of the Zoo will be quality,” Hudson-Prenkert said. “Whether it’s your jam or not, it’s okay. I had a woman come up to me today and say ‘I don’t really like jazz, but I really loved the WMU Jazz Studies group.’”

Sounds of the Zoo is hosting a Halloween-themed concert at the Old Dog Tavern Oct. 11 and costumes are encouraged. For more information on pricing and bands visit their Instagram page: @soundsofthezoo.
