Legendary country music singer Ronnie McDowell got some good news on Monday, according to his son.
Tyler Dean McDowell shared the news on Facebook.
“I have dad in the car and we are on our way home!” he wrote. “Me and/or Ronnie Dean will give an update soon. Love y’all.”
The fact that the 75-year-old has been deemed well enough to be released is music to the ears of his fans because McDowell had a scary incident while performing Saturday at
the Summer Solstice Music Festival in Oley, Pennsylvania.
WKRN reported that McDowell was “three or four songs” into his set when he began to slur words and was “not making sense.” His tour manager told the station that he then brought McDowell to the side of the stage and asked him if he was OK.
At that point, the manager told the station that McDowell answered, ‘No,’ and then said he thought he might be having a stroke. The station said that McDowell was still in a hospital in Reading on Sunday undergoing tests.
His son had reached him by then and was providing promising updates on Facebook.
“Just wanted to let everyone know — I made it to Pennsylvania,” he wrote on Sunday. “Ronnie Dean & I are in the room with Dad. He’s talking to us, and we’re waiting to do the MRI. As soon as I know more, so will y’all. Love Forever.”
He followed up three hours later with some promising news.
“2nd update: Brought dad some Popcorners and a Kombucha (snacks he likes),” he wrote. “Ronnie Dean brought his comfy shows, favorite brush, and Vietnam hat. Dad was very excited about all this — like a kid in a candy store. Figured y’all could use a lil’ levity.”
McDowell began his career in 1977 and charted more than 30 songs in the top 40 on the Billboard country music charts. Two of those songs — “Older Woman” and “You’re Gonna Ruin My Bad Reputation” — each reached the top spot on the charts. McDowell had 11 more songs hit the top 10.
He was also known for his song about Elvis Presley’s death in 1977, called “The King Is Gone,” which became a country and pop hit.
