‘Fallout’ Devs on Season 2 Game Tie-Ins, ‘Fallout 76’ Fishing Tips

No, there’s still no word yet on exactly when Amazon’s Prime Video will debut “Fallout” Season 2 — but the team that never stops working on ongoing action RPG game “Fallout 76” is prepping updates tied to the new season, as well as the game studio’s own fresh game-specific features.

“We’re always focused on the game,” Bethesda Game Studios’ “Fallout 76” creative director Jon Rush told Variety during an interview at Summer Game Fest in Los Angeles in June. “I think a distinct trait of the ‘Fallout 76’ game is that we’re the furthest back in time. And it’s kind of funny, because the show’s the furthest into the future. So there’s a lot of room where we don’t necessarily need to overlap. There are some things that we could overlap the stories ,that could exist, but we largely try to keep those pretty simple. So the show is very effective storytelling, great storytelling, very ‘Fallout,’ being made by folks that are big fans of the game and the series, and so are we. The two go together really well. So folks see the show and want more of that same kind of story, and they’re going to come into ’76,’ they’re going to come into ‘Fallout 4,’ or come into ‘Fallout 3.’ Lining things up with the seasonal releases of the show, it’s stuff that we talk about all the time, and we do have plans for things here and there. I’m not going to go into detail on any of those now, but the two teams do talk to one another.”

On June 3, “Fallout 76” added its free “Gone Fission” update, a DLC that Rush says the development team have been discussing “for a while” — even as fans had been rabidly asking for the feature across social media platforms.

“I think the timing of it just worked out for the summer to where it felt like, oh, fishing is a very summer activity,” Rush said, adding that the feature is especially an obvious win for “Fallout 76” players already “familiar with the Appalachia map,” as “there’s water all over the place.” “Streams, ponds, rivers, creeks, and so I think once you say that, the imagination just kind of starts going, what kind of crazy things am I going to be pulling out of Wasteland waters?” Rush said.

Since launch, the “Fallout 76” team has noticed early player behavior with the fishing update, in particular, an affinity for building fishing camps.

“So as you go and you fish and you do your dailies and your weekly challenges, and you also do things in the season, there’s a lot of things within the camp that now you can actually create a fishing camp,” “Fallout 76” lead producer Bill LaCoste said. “And so what we’re seeing a lot right now is people are finding these really like niche areas of streams and lakes and things like that that they’ve never really kind of discovered, and they’re going, I’m going to build a camp there. And then they build a camp, and then they put up a weather station. And now they’re realizing that having a weather station that produces rain or has a rad storm tied to it can then increase your chances of rare fish. And so now they’re actually doing it with intent. So it’s reinforcing many, many different systems within the game, and it’s not just stopping by a body of water.”
